OPT and PBS KIDS celebrate Mother Nature in April with Explore the Outdoors featuring themed on-air programming, online games and activities, and special local events designed to encourage kids and families to discover nature. It’s time to shake off the winter chill and get outside!

Don’t miss new episodes of PBS KIDS’ science and nature-based series, Wild Kratts and Nature Cat. The new episodes include a special Earth Day episode ofNature Cat on April 25, and the 100th episode of Wild Kratts on April 28.

We hope you can join us for several Explore the Outdoors events this month, including the following.

  • LITTLE ACORNS: SPRING PEEPERS
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Tuesday, April 12 at 11 am & 1:30 pm
      • It’s time for some frog-frolicking fun exploring the life cycle and world of the tiny peepers.  Nature Center staff will lead children through activities to gain a better understanding of frogs.  Ages 3-6. Registration begins April 1.  Call 417-888-4237.  Little Acorns programs are limited to one per month.
  • STORY TIME WITH MS. LADYBUG
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Wednesday, April 13 at 11 am
      • Join Volunteer Naturalist Joyce Tolliver as she reads a nature story and shares activities with your 2-6 year olds. Please, no organized groups.  No registration required.
  • LITTLE ACORNS: TURTLEMANIA
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Thursday, April 14 at 11 am & 1:30 pm
      • Turtles come in many shapes and sizes.  Learn the names of common turtles and discover where and how they live. Ages 3-6. Registration begins April 1.  Call 417-888-4237.  Little Acorns programs are limited to one per month.
  • PARTY FOR THE PLANET
    • Dickerson Park Zoo
    • Saturday, April 16, 10 am – 2 pm
      • Two great events make one big day at the zoo! Celebrate Earth Day at Dickerson Park Zoo with hands-on conversation learning station and zookeepers chats.  Also, watch the zoo’s animals “hunt” when zookeepers hide papier-mache eggs filled with treats or use other egg-themed enrichment items.

  • NATIONAL JUNIOR RANGER DAY
    • George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, MO
    • Saturday, April 16 from 10 am to 1 pm
      • Want to be a firefighter? A police officer? A wildlife biologist? A teacher? You can be all in the National Park Service! Come learn about resource protection, education and management in the National Park Service at the National Junior Ranger Day!
  • PARENTS AS TEACHERS STORY TIME
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Friday, April 22 at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30
      • Parent Educators from Parents As Teachers will offer a Nature At Its Best story time.  Enjoy stories, activities, and finger plays designed for children from birth to age five.  Each session is 45 minutes in length.  No registration required.
  • HIKE FOR HOMESCHOOLERS
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Friday, April 22 at 1 pm
      • Join us for a naturalist-guided hike to learn about plants and animals.  Wear comfortable hiking shoes and feel free to bring journals, cameras, and binoculars. Ages 5-adult.  Registration begins April 1.  Call 417-888-4237.

    • George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond, MO

      • Celebrate George Washington Carver’s love for art. Visitors will be able to participate in hands-on demonstrations and instructional workshops utilizing pastels, natural dyes, pencils, and more.
  • CONSERVATION KIDS: CELEBRATE EARTH DAY
    • Springfield Conservation Nature Center
    • Thursday, April 28 at 6:30 pm
      • Learn about making good environmental choices, recycling and what kids can do to make our earth a little more “green.” Enjoy a fun, interactive evening as you compete in a “green” shopping spree with the City of Springfield Environmental Services staff. Ages 7-12.  Please, no younger siblings and only one adult per group of kids.  Registration begins April 1. Call 417-888-4237. 
  • EXPLORE THE OUTDOORS PLAY DAY
    • Fassnight Park
    • Saturday, April 30 from 10 am to 2 pm
      • Join us at the Community Wide Play Day, hosted by the Community Partnership of the Ozarks.  This free event is an opportunity for children and families to interact and learn through play.  Be sure to visit the booth hosted by OPT and the Springfield Department of Environmental Services and the Department of Conservation to get some PBS Kids goodies, adopt a tree, sign up for the kids fishing program, investigate nature and the creek and more!
