On Sunday, May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado devastated, and forever changed, the community of Joplin, MO. During the past year, with outpouring assistance and support from many organizations and volunteers, Joplin has focused on the difficult and sometimes intimidating task of rebuilding and healing. Their progress is evident and inspiring, especially in view of the scope of this tragedy. Over the course of a year Joplin has demonstrated its resiliency and spirit...and its gratitude. While damage from last year’s tornado is still evident, much has been accomplished with the financial generosity and volunteer support of concerned citizens; many of them from other parts of our country. The story of Joplin’s 2011 tornado is horrific and tragic…it is also a reaffirming portrait of the area’s residents and the compassion and assistance from fellow citizens, many from far away, as the community recovers and rebuilds. In this local production of Ozarks Public Television, made possible through financial support from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, members of the Joplin community reflect on the previous year; what’s been accomplished, and what’s still ahead.
