Celebrating 50 Years
Ozarks Public Television (OPT), the region’s PBS member station, serves the community through its full-power stations in Springfield (KOZK) and Joplin (KOZJ). Born from a grassroots effort, OPT emerged as a vital resource in the Ozarks, delivering television programming designed to inform, entertain, and inspire its viewers.
Decades after its founding, OPT continues to fulfill this mission with four 24/7 programming services. OPT HD offers a blend of national and local public television content, while OPT PBS KIDS provides a safe, educational space for children and families throughout the day. OPT CREATE caters to lifestyle enthusiasts with shows on cooking, crafting, and travel, and OPT WORLD delivers thought-provoking programming on science, nature, news, and public affairs.
A cornerstone of OPT’s mission is to document, present, and preserve the rich history and culture of the Ozarks through local production. The ongoing series OzarksWatch Video Magazine showcases the people, places, and traditions that define the region. Additionally, OPT produces documentary features that capture stories of shared heritage, while its Sense of Community series offers in-depth explorations of current issues, community initiatives, and local resources.
On January 21, 2025, this legacy was celebrated when Mayor Ken McClure proclaimed the date as Ozarks Public Television Day during a special event marking OPT’s 50th anniversary. The commemoration honored the station’s five decades of service, spotlighting its unwavering commitment to education, cultural preservation, and community engagement, made possible by the enduring support of the Ozarks community.
For over 50 years, OPT has been a trusted source of education, inspiration, and entertainment. But it’s crucial that you continue to be part of this service.
